Memory Lane: I don't think any of us understand how we survived. But there were some safeguards in my rural neighborhood. Everybody knew everybody and their kids so questionable behavior was often reported to our parents. But I did suffer from a concussion while bike riding-no helmet.

Ah, yes... helmets. Well, at least my parents believed in the polio vaccine! Like Gigi said, we lined up at school to get it.

I agree. How is it any of us survived? In today's world, parents hover so much that I wonder how kids ever learn independence. There must be a middle ground.

Well, I think there is a middle ground, but parents are paranoid! There is too much scary stuff out there. Or at least I think so.

As another child of the 1950s, I can relate to so much of this. I would add only Medical Care. No routine preventive visits, that I can recall. Stood (gratefully) in line with everyone else for the polio vaccines and I vaguely recall smallpox inoculation. There was no DPT or MMR at that time. When I was sick, the doctor showed up at our house with an all purpose cure - shot of penicillin in the butt. Thanks for the trip.
